Nikon D70: 5 quick tips for getting more from your Nikon DSLR

So you think you know how to use your Nikon D70? Like many of us, you may have a DSLR or compact system camera but tend to use only a handful of your its features.

In our ongoing review of some of the more popular current and ‘out of date’ Nikon cameras, we want to help you better harness the creative potential of your camera.

Call them camera tips, or call it a user’s guide to your favourite Nikon camera. The advice below comes from experts who have used the Nikon D70 and know this DSLR inside and out.

If you have your own Nikon D70 tips you’d like to share, post them in the comments below. What we want to build is an ever-growing user’s guide for the Nikon D70 that comes not from a press release or a lab test, but from the photographers who shoot with this DSLR (read more DSLR tips or read about another Nikon DSLR).

We want to inspire you to twist the mode dial and move beyond your favourite settings and functions and get more out of your Nikon D70 starting today!

    Nikon D70 Tips: flash compensation

    Nikon D70 tip no. 1
Flash compensation is an easy way to fine-tune flash exposure, but it won’t help if the flash is already at the limit of its range; move closer or set a higher ISO instead.

Nikon D70 Tips: free Nikon software

    Nikon D70 tip no. 2
The only supplied software is the low-powered and limited PictureProject; fortunately Nikon View (now up to version NX2) is a free download from Nikon websites.

Nikon D70 Tips: new scene modes

    Nikon D70 tip no. 3
The D70 introduced Scene Modes (Digital Vari-Program). All these modes predetermine how JPEG images are processed. Set Image Quality to RAW to be free to change the look of the image later.

Nikon D70 Tips: shoot with flash at 1/500sec

    Nikon D70 tip no. 4
The D70 is one of a few Nikon DSLRs which can shoot with flash at speeds up to 1/500 sec; this is a great asset for action shots. Even the D4 can’t equal this!

    Nikon D70 Tips: Help button

    Nikon D70 tip no. 5
The ‘Help’ button gives a brief explanation of items in the Customs Settings Menu – but that’s about all it does. For the rest, you need NPhoto!
