Nikon Coolpix A vs Nikon 1 V2: which one is best?

Nikon’s announcement of the CoolPix A has taken many camera watchers by surprise, and we think it will spark a major debate – Nikon CoolPix A vs Nikon 1 V2: which one is best?

The CoolPix A is a high-end compact camera that appears to compete head-on with Nikon’s existing Nikon 1 cameras, using a bigger, DSLR-sized sensor, advanced manual controls and a top-quality lens. It’s designed to appeal to discerning photographers who want SLR quality in a pocket-size camera. The problem is that’s not a million miles from what the Nikon 1 V2 is supposed to do, either.

So that gives photographers a tricky dilemma: do you go for the advanced and sophisticated Nikon CoolPix A, or the equally advanced and sophisticated Nikon 1 V2? Here are some blow-by-blow comparisons to help you decide.

Nikon Coolpix A vs Nikon V2: 10 key differences to help you decide

    1. Sensor size and resolution

The Coolpix A uses the 16.2-megapixel APS-C sensor from the Nikon D7000, measuring 23.6 x 15.6mm. The Nikon 1 V2, by contrast, uses a much smaller 14.2-megapixel ‘CX-format’ sensor that’s roughly half way in size between that of the CoolPix A and a regular compact digital camera, and measures just 13.2 x 8.8mm. Bigger sensors always produce better quality, so this gives the CoolPix A a big head start. Round one goes to the CoolPix A, then.

    2. ISO and RAW files

The CoolPix A has an ISO range of 100-6400, expandable to ISO25600 in ‘Hi 2′ Mode. The Nikon 1 V2 also has a range of ISO 160-6400. They don’t sound very different, but we expect the CoolPix A to perform far better at high ISOs, based on our existing lab tests of the Nikon D7000 DSLR (the Coolpix A has the same sensor) and the Nikon 1 V2.

Both cameras can shoot raw format files, but the CoolPix A can save 14-bit RAW files, where the Nikon 1 V2 saves 12-bit files. It’s a small difference, but a significant one, and it further extends the CoolPix A’s inherent image quality advantage.
